The Offering
H180mm x W330mm x D330mm
Stoneware clay, porcelain slip,
layered ceramic glaze materials,
steel wire, textured fabric,
screen-print stain application,
dry glaze, Multiple firings.
The fragile scrolls in this artwork symbolise
a parchment called Klaf, inscribed with the
Hebrew prayer Shema Yisrael.
The Shema is traditionally recited
at morning, evening
and at the passing of a life.
Rolled up and placed inside
a decorative parchment called Mezuzah,
it is attached to a home doorpost
to offer protection.
In my artwork, The Offering, these delicate scrolls
are carried by seven reiterated robust clay vessels
bonded as one. Strong and peaceful,
they suggest a ceremonial procession.
Each delicate scroll is formed with translucent clay
and embodies a potent energy in a wish for safety.
In binding repetitive singular
elements together, imprinted with prayers,
names and numbers, the work speaks about people,
the individuals that connect to a group, and the
sense of security within.
The Offering is an object of fortitude and vulnerability.
